The Phoenix Children’s Chorus has two Prep Choirs. One meets at our main campus, The Phoenix Center for the Arts in Central Phoenix, on Tuesday evenings and the other meets at our East Valley location at the ASU Polytechnic Campus on Thursday evenings. The Prep Choirs are comprised of our beginning choristers who come to us with little or no experience. Most of the choristers in the Prep Choirs are between 2nd and 4th grade. The director of both Prep Choirs is Mrs. Janel Huyett.
The purpose of the Prep Choir is to introduce and teach the fundamental elements of vocal technique such as posture, breathing, vowel placement, good singing tone, tonal memory, pitch relationships and simple rhythm patterns. These elements are required to develop the child’s musicianship skills and for advancement to the Cadet Choir. Choristers are encouraged to develop self-control, discipline, and stage presence as each relates to the music, rehearsals, and performances. Music literacy is taught within the rehearsal. Choristers will realize a sense of pride in their work through learning basic choral techniques, music of all genres, movement and performance.
