The Phoenix Children’s Chorus
1984 – 2018
Transforming lives through music

The Phoenix Children’s Chorus was founded in 1984 by Artistic Director, Marcus Denton with just thirty-five children divided into two choirs.  Mr. Denton continued to direct both choirs until 1988 when Mr. Ken Goodenberger took over as Artistic Director.   He continued the founding work of Marcus Denton with the two choirs until 1993 when the leadership of the Phoenix Children’s Chorus was turned over to Ron Carpenter.  Under the artistic direction of Ron Carpenter the organization has grown to provide quality choral music education to more than 325 children and teenagers, ages 8-18, each year.  Now, in its 30th season, the Phoenix Children’s Chorus includes five progressively experienced choirs with rehearsal opportunities in both East Valley and Phoenix Metropolitan area.  The program has also grown to include five directors, five accompanists, nine music literacy teachers, an assistant director, East Valley business manager, membership coordinator, Development Director and an Executive Director.   Thousands of children have benefitted from its activities over the last 30 years.  Many of its former members have gone on to become music teachers, performers, business and community leaders.

The Chorus’s role in the community has grown considerably as well. Each year the Phoenix Children’s Chorus produces an annual Holiday Concert Series as well as an annual Spring Concert Series at major venues throughout the valley. The Chorus performs to over 2500 patrons during each concert series.  PCC also features all of its members at its annual fundraising gala held each spring.  Additionally, PCC hosts the annual spring children’s festival, Voices of the Valley.

The award-winning PCC touring choirs have performed in Austria, Germany, Ireland, Russia, Canada, Mexico, China, Italy and throughout the United States serving as musical ambassadors representing the City of Phoenix, The State of Arizona and the United States. Working jointly with The Sister Cities of Phoenix, The Chorus has toured to three of Phoenix’s Sister Cities: Ennis, Ireland, Hermosillo, Mexico and Catania, Italy.  The Chorus performs with leading music organizations including the Phoenix Symphony, Arizona Musicfest, Musical Instrument Museum and Live Nation Entertainment. PCC has also performed with Rita Coolidge, Marty Ashby, Roger Waters, Andre Rieu, Rex Allen Jr., Wayne Newton and Stevie Wonder by providing children for performances and productions that require a children’s choir.  PCC has also been featured on National Public Radio nationally syndicated show “From the Top,” among other credits.

The Phoenix Children’s Chorus is proud to continue its tradition of excellence as it carries out its mission:  To foster excellence in youth by facilitating artistic, musical, and cultural development through choral education and performance.  We provide a professional environment in which a diverse community advances the talents, self-esteem, and life skills of its members. As global ambassadors, we develop a passion to enrich the world around us by creating perpetual supporters of the arts.

As we look to the future of the Phoenix Children’s Chorus, we eagerly anticipate providing our chorus with exciting new performance venues and touring possibilities. We hope that you look to the future of PCC with anticipation as well. Funding for touring and scholarships continues to be a need for the Chorus and we hope you will consider being involved in our future.  We extend our deep appreciation to Phoenix Center for the Arts, board members, choral staff, patrons, parents, volunteers, and sponsors who have made these past 30 years successful! We look forward to continuing our partnership with you in the bright future ahead.
